Newborn Photos At-Home

Can you guess what we got up to last week? We may have ordered a few props from Amazon and done our own newborn photos… those professional photographers can be expensive. So here is a look at what a white doona, some flowers, a boppy and two cheap Amazon purchases can get you!

NEWBORN PHOTOS AT-HOME

First, we lay down a white doona (and cover) as our base, or studio white space as we like to call it. We then used the boppy pillow as a prop to hold Ayla up off the floor and give her something comfortable to lie on and position her on. Then we covered it with a dusty blue fur round blanket and draped her in a blue lace swaddle of-sorts. We lay fresh white and blue flowers all around the boppy set-up to add some interest and keep with the girly theme although it’s mainly blue.

Then we started clicking away!

TIP: We did this shoot inside our home which doesn’t normally get a good dose of natural afternoon light. The best time for us was morning for the most even light which makes for much softer, bright newborn photos. We made sure the set-up was facing the light too so as not to cast harsh shadows. We also freshly fed Ayla and burped her, so she was snoozy and ready for a relax and that helped minimize the screaming.

The funny thing though, is that she peed all over everything in these photos, and you would be none the wiser! Even the hydrangeas got a dousing! Haha. And although she looks completely peaceful here, that was not the case for the entirety of the shoot! Be patient with your baby, and yourself. As we learned the hard way, it can be very frustrating!

TIP: Allow about 30 minutes after a feed to settle them into a deeper sleep, and losing their diaper so it doesn’t leave marks on their bottom for photos. Then remove it just before you start shooting, for a smooth looking baby butt!

NEWBORN PHOTOS – PRODUCTS & DETAILS

Ayla wears… nothing! Haha. She is swaddled in this blue lace blanket from Amazon.

Other items in this shoot include the boppy pillow and the dusty blue fur blanket, both from Amazon.
We already owned the doona/backdrop and the boppy pillow (but you could use any kind of round pillow for this), so all we were out of pocket was for the two blankets and the flowers (roughly $40), which made for a much cheaper alternative to spending hundred’s of dollars on a professional photographer for newborn photos!
